Mantis

Here are tips and facts about Mantises.

Why Keep a Pet Mantis?

  • Very interactive (watch you, track movement)

  • Quiet, odorless, and clean

  • Don’t need much space

  • Amazing hunters and behavior

⚠️ Short lifespan (usually 6–12 months).

2. Best Mantis Species for Pets (Beginner-Friendly)

⭐ Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis)

  • Hardy, large, easy to find

  • Good for beginners

  • Lives ~8–12 months

🌿 Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula spp.)

  • Calm, big, impressive

  • Eats larger prey

  • Great display species

🍃 Ghost Mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa)

  • Looks like a dead leaf

  • Slower, very cool behavior

  • Needs slightly higher humidity

🌸 Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)

  • Stunning pink/white color

  • More delicate

  • Better for experienced keepers

3. Enclosure Setup (Very Important)

🏠 Size Rule

  • Height: 3× mantis body length

  • Width: 2× body length

Mantises molt hanging upside down—height matters more than floor space.

🪵 Interior

  • Mesh or fabric lid (never metal mesh—can damage feet)

  • Sticks, plants, or vines for climbing

  • Good airflow

🌡️ Temperature

  • Most species: 75–85°F (24–29°C)

  • Use a heat mat on the side, not bottom

💧 Humidity

  • 40–60% (species dependent)

  • Light misting 1x/day or every other day

  • Mantises drink water droplets from surfaces

4. Feeding Your Mantis 🍽️

What They Eat

Live insects only:

  • Fruit flies (for babies / nymphs)

  • House flies

  • Roaches

  • Crickets (not ideal long-term)

  • Moths

Feeding Schedule

  • Nymphs: every 1–2 days

  • Adults: every 2–4 days

💡 Never feed prey larger than the mantis’ head.

5. Molting (Critical Knowledge ⚠️)

Mantises molt several times as they grow.

Before molting:

  • They stop eating

  • Become sluggish

  • Hang upside down

Rules:
❌ Do NOT handle
❌ Do NOT feed
❌ Do NOT disturb

A bad molt can be fatal—proper humidity helps.

6. Handling & Behavior

  • Mantises can be handled gently

  • They may:

    • Turn their head to look at you

    • Step onto your hand

    • Occasionally strike defensively

🟢 They rarely bite, and it doesn’t hurt much.

7. Lifespan & Growth

  • Hatch → nymph → adult in ~4–6 months

  • Females live longer than males

  • Males are thinner, fly more

8. Common Mistakes (Avoid These)

❌ Metal mesh lids
❌ Overfeeding
❌ Low enclosure height
❌ Feeding wild-caught insects (pesticides)
❌ Disturbing during molt

9. Health & Signs of Trouble

  • Falling often → humidity too low

  • Stuck molt → improper setup

  • Not eating for long → nearing molt or old age

10. Are Mantises Good Pets?

✅ Great if you want:

  • A visually stunning insect

  • Interactive behavior

  • Minimal space needs

❌ Not ideal if you want:

  • Long-lived pets

  • Handling every day

  • Multiple mantises together (they’re cannibalistic)

11. Fun Mantis Facts

  • Can rotate head 180°

  • See in 3D

  • Recognize movement patterns

  • Females sometimes eat males (not always!)
